International students wishing to start their Master’s degree in the Netherlands should avail this opportunity. The Scholarship program consists of both the High Potential Scholarship (funded by the Maastricht University Scholarship Fund), and the NL Scholarship, which is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in conjunction with Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences. It is aimed at international students from outside the EU/EEA who wish to follow a full degree program in the Netherlands.

Number of Scholarships:

The Maastricht University (UM) offers 24 scholarships under the NL – High Potential scholarship program each year for excellent students outside the European Union (EU) and who have been admitted to the eligible master’s program at the Maastricht University, Netherlands.

Eligibility Requirements

All candidates applying for the NL – High Potential scholarship 2024/25 must meet the following requirements: –

  • The candidate must be living in a country outside the EU / EEA, Switzerland, or Surinam.
  • Must be eligible for obtaining a student visa and residence permit for the Netherlands
  • The candidate must not hold a double nationality
  • The applicant must apply to a full-time Master’s program in any one of the participating programs.
  • The candidate must meet the requirements for admission to the applied program
  • The applicant should have never participated in a degree-seeking higher education from any institute in the Netherlands
  • The candidate must be less than 35 years of age on 1 September 2024
  • The candidate must have demonstrated excellent performance in Bachelors

Duration of the NL – High Potential Scholarship

The duration of the NL – High Potential Scholarship at the Maastricht University (UM) is as follows: –

  • 13 months for a one-year Master’s program
  • 25 months for 2 years Master’s program

Scholarship Benefits

The 24 full scholarships offered under this program are € 30,000 (including tuition fee waiver and monthly stipend) each academic year. The details are as follows: –

             *These amounts are changeable.

Please note that the room that will be offered to the selected candidates by Maastricht Housing, will cost an average of € 450 per month in rent. This calculation is based on a room in the guesthouse with shared shower and toilet rooms (male/female) & kitchen facilities. If the selected candidates wish to avail of a different room, they should keep in mind this will have an impact on their monthly allowance.

*The amount of € 12,675 for living expenses (€ 975 per month) covers the following expenses and can be broken down as follows (amounts are subject to change):

–              Housing: € 450

–              Groceries and personal hygiene: € 140

–              Telephone: € 60

–              Travel: € 70

–              Books and study materials: € 60

–              Clothing, hobbies and going out: € 105

–              Miscellaneous: € 90

Application Procedure

  • Step 1– Register for a master program via http://www.studielink.nl/
  • Apply on the above portal
  • Once applied, international students will receive a student ID number from UM as you will need a student number to complete and submit the scholarship application
  • Step 2– use the link to fill out the application https://corsa-forms.mumc.maastrichtuniversity.nl/user/login?destination=/form/ssc-scholarships
  • Upload the following documents: –
    • CV
    • Letter of motivation
    • Proof of academic excellence
      • Degree
      • Transcript
      • A letter from the previous Head of the Department stating you are one of the top 20 students
    • Personal statement of financial needs
    • A reference letter

Selection Procedure

 Step 1: The UM International Services Desk checks if all applications are complete after 1 February 2024.

Step 2: The UM International Services Desk sends all complete applications to each UM faculty in February 2024.

Step 3: Each Faculty selects and ranks their top 5% of scholarship applicants and sends these to the UM International Services Desk for a final check in March 2024.

Step 4: The UM International Services Desk confirms the faculty selection by the end of March 2024.

Step 5: International students will be informed all candidates of their application status in April 2024. The status will be selected, waitlisted, or rejected by the beginning of May 2024 at the latest.

International students must sign and return the award letter to the UM international services desk to accept the scholarship.
