DAAD – SEARCA Scholarship Programme – 2024/25 | Natural Resources Management and Food Sciences
This fully funded scholarship in Natural Resources Management and Food Sciences was started in 1975-1976 in partnership with DAAD and SEARCA (Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture).
As of Academic year 2023/2024, DAAD and SEARCA have awarded 419 Southeast Asian nationals from Cambodia (19), Indonesia (91), Lao PDR (10), Malaysia (15), Myanmar (30), Philippines (100), Thailand (82), Timor Leste (26) and Vietnam (46). Among these 419 scholarships,206 pursued their MS, 208 pursued their Ph.D., and 5 enrolled in Non-degree programs.
Objectives of DAAD – SEARCA Scholarship:
By training future academic professionals and leaders, the scholarship contributes to the following long-term impacts.
- Qualified professionals’ involvement in solving development-related problems
- Graduates strengthening education and research in Southeast Asia
- Structural strengthening and regional networking of partner institutions and universities
Eligibility:
- Must be a national of Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, Timor Leste, and Vietnam
- Must be a staff member of a public university or a candidate considered for teaching or research staff recruitment, or from the public sector
- For Masters, the age should not be more than 35, and for PhD, the age should be not more than 40.
- Last university qualification must be completed not more than 6 years at the time of application
- The proposed thesis research should focus on SEARCA’s overarching theme of https://www.searca.org/what-we-do
- Research topics must fall within the following areas: –
- Agri-Business Models for Increased Productivity and Income
- Sustainable Farming Systems and Natural Resource Management
- Food and Nutrition Security
- Transformational Leadership for Agricultural and Rural Development (ARD)
- Gender and Youth Engagement in ARD
- Enhanced ARD towards Climate Resilience
- EcoHealth / One Health Applications to ARD

Note: The scholarship holders are also encouraged to apply for research grants in Germany for 2 to 6 months, at the time of application. The short-term research scholarship includes the: –
- A monthly scholarship payment for living costs
- Health/accident / personal liability insurance
- A flat-rate travel allowance

- One recommendation letter for MS and two for PhD by University Professors
- Notice of university admission or proof of application to the university
- Academic records
- Motivational Letter (1-2 pages for MS and 1-3 pages for PhD)
- Passport
- For research-based MS/Ph.D. Program: a timetable for course-based MS/Ph.D. program; semestral / term schedule and timetable
- Brief description of the research
- Medical certificate
- Official endorsement from the employer
- Proof of English Proficiency (IELTS result 6.0, TOEFL iBT result 80)
- For PhD candidates, the following additional documents are required: –
- Declaration and acceptance from the academic supervisor or commitment letter from the intended post that a supervisor will be assigned
- PhD proposal (8-10 pages)
- A one-page abstract of the proposal
